Promoting your business is a non-stop job, so try to get as much free media attention as you can. Believe it or not there is plenty of free publicity out there. You just have to go out and get it. Most people think that if they have a great business, the media will approach them. Well they won’t. You need to inform the media about your business, but it is no good just telling them about your products you need to have an angle. It needs to be newsworthy; if it isn’t newsworthy it will not get printed so make sure it is interesting for people to read not just a product/service plug.

Journalists are constantly looking for interesting and newsworthy stories that they can write about. To have a good story sent to them is a blessing as it saves them a lot of time and effort.

I run a company called Tinytalk, which offers baby sign language products and classes for parents with their babies. I started the business from signing with my own daughter from an American version. This concept is extremely new in Australia and in fact Tinytalk was the first company to offer these services for everyone. This is a very newsworthy story and as such Tinytalk has been featured in the media on numerous occasions, including Sunrise, The Today Show, Today Tonight, Seven News, Gold Coast News, various Radio Programs, Practical Parenting, Mother and Baby, Junior, Body & Soul, Dynamic Business Magazine, Acumen Business plus various local publications. I am not telling you this to show off, I just want you to know how much free publicity there is out there if you are prepared to look for it.

You don’t have to have a new product or invent something completely new; you can use existing products and find a new angle on them. Here is an example:

Press releases are a great thing to use when trying to contact the media to obtain free advertising.
